Webpage borders
My favorite online site for clothes shopping uses vibrant backgrounds without making their text difficult to read or interfering with the images of their products by using the backgrounds as left and right page borders. They can - and do! - change the background every time they have a new collection to spotlight. The borders provide an almost subliminal boost to the "look" of the collection, whether that involves seasonal colors, holiday glitter, or fun in the sun. Although I've put a navigation menu in the lefthand border, they leave theirs completely empty. The background in the borders of this page, as well as the divider used below, are made from a skirt that was in a previous year's collection.
This type of effect is often done using CSS, although I've used regular HTML to achieve it here. Whatever method you use to build your site, be sure to check out this effect at different screen resolutions and with various browsers (at least Explorer and one "alternative" browser such as Firefox) before going live, to make sure you're getting the look you want. There's an additional page of considerations for anyone wanting to use extremely narrow borders, and/or using CuteSITE Builder or cascading style sheets.
By the way, if you have a site with products that would lend themselves to this kind of tile, let me know the address and I'll take a look to see if it's something I can work with. If you give me permission to post the backgrounds on this site as free tiles, there's not only no charge for the tile-making, but your site will receive a one-way link from your backgrounds that are posted here.
